Take your pick: the carpet mini, the sheer (Photo: Catwalking.com), the wrap, the split or the midaxi
1. Carpet mini
When shopping for a mini skirt this season, how it feels is just as important as how it looks. Whether it’s an embroidered tapestry number or a shaggy mohair mini, touchable tactile textures make the most of very little fabric. This cosy-looking option from Sportmax Code wins extra points for its on-trend Sixties A-line shape — and for looking great with tights. (£115; Max Mara, 19-21 Old Bond Street, W1)
2. Sheer
Sure, it may not be the obvious trend for winter — mainly because it must be worn with bare legs — but the sheer skirt is one of the season’s biggest catwalk heroes. Topshop’s high-end Unique collection for one championed a host of barely-there styles, from delicate lace slips to intricately embroidered tulle. If you’re going to brave it, be sure to pile on the layers. A long-line knit, thick socks and stomping ankle boots are just for starters. (From a selection from £155, topshop.com)
3. Wrap
If you thought there could be no substitute for a pencil skirt in your working wardrobe, then you’re yet to discover the virtues of a wrap skirt. The style that dominated spring in micro-mini proportions has taken on longer, more office-friendly lengths this winter, making it likely to become one of the most worn items you buy this season. This simple belted version from Zara’s Studio line is a perfect example of its demure yet directional capabilities. (£39.99, zara.com)
4. Split
Split skirts and eveningwear are natural bedfellows. But a thigh high isn’t for everyone. Instead opt for modest multiple splits when cocktail hour comes calling, such as this jazzy cranberry-hued sequin number from ASOS’s Christmas collection. Team with a sloppy jumper for a Saturday night at the pub or slip on the matching top to be the best dressed at the office party. (£75,asos.com)
5. Midaxi
Longer than a midi but shorter than a maxi, the midaxi (see what we did there?) wins the season’s most interesting hemline award. Intrigued? Head to COS to take your pick from a host of minimalist, elongated styles or snap up this pocket-pleasing rib-knit option from Warehouse sharpish. A word of warning though: the tricky length renders flats near impossible to pull off. Team with chunky heeled boots for a far more flattering result. (£38, warehouse.co.uk)
